Today is World Water Day

Every year, on 22 March, people around the world mark World Water Day. This year’s theme is “Leaving no one behind” inspired by Sustainable Development Goal 6 – a promise that everyone shall have access to clean, safe water by 2030.

On our planet, at this very moment in time as you read this article, billions of people are living without the safe water they need to survive. By definition, safe water doesn’t just refer to whether it is clean or dirty; safe water is water that would be suitable for consumption, free from contamination and readily available on premises such as homes, schools and workplaces.

Many people refer to these majestic creatures as peacocks but did you know that is actually the name for the male of the species? These birds are called peafowl with the males known as peacocks and the females being peahens. Here are ten more fascinating facts about these incredible birds…

1) Peacocks fan out their lengthy feathered trains, which can measure up to 2.2 metres long, to attract the females. Their “eye-spots” are called ocelli.

Spotlight: Claws Out founder, Beth Jennings, reveals the truth behind cub petting

Cubs
Credit: Beth Jennings

I was made aware of Beth’s story when in discussion with a fellow guest at this year’s Dr Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Awards in London last week. From the brief story I heard, I knew I had to find out more about her eye-opening campaign and short film on the cub petting industry, so got in touch with Beth myself. Here’s what she had to say…

C: How would you describe Claws Out?

B: Claws Out began as an awareness blog and soon snowballed into a full time role as a Campaign Manager for IAPWA (International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals). The entire entity stemmed from my experience as a volunteer in 2015, hand rearing lion cubs after being led to believe that I was contributing towards conservation. It’s now the charity’s only lion welfare campaign, raising awareness about the plight of lions in South Africa Continue reading “Spotlight: Claws Out founder, Beth Jennings, reveals the truth behind cub petting”

Taking a global stand against climate change: my guest post

On 18 March, my article on last week’s climate change strikes went live on Rev. Rebecca Writes.

Both Rebecca and I have a passion for animals and the world we share with them, and it seems that thousands of others also share our enthusiasm in working to protect and conserve our planet for future generations. More than 2,000 protests took place around the world, stretching from North America to Asia. This landmark global movement was inspired by a 16-year-old’s passion and determination to take a stand and make her government listen.

A whole new world: going freelance

I’m so excited to be back to blogging! Since becoming a full-time writer, my blog has sadly fell by the way side as I completely and wholeheartedly immersed and dedicated myself to perfecting my style of writing.

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to take on freelance projects. I believe freelancing will help me develop and broaden my knowledge and experience even further, and now just feels like the right time to branch out and begin my new chapter.

Without sounding like I’m blowing my own trumpet, I have a really exciting future ahead of me. I recently got engaged to someone who’s job entails a lot of travelling so I know that freelance writing would be the perfect fit. What with wedding planning in full swing and the prospect of taking on new challenges and projects, I’ve never felt happier.

Writing for a weekly current affairs magazine has shown me that I am capable of writing about any topic in any length, whether it be full page features or news stories told in just 45 words.

On the topic of freelance projects… yesterday I received an email confirming that I had been accepted as a Standard level writer on Copify! I had submitted my CV and a sample of work over the weekend, and was surprised to have been confirmed so quickly (the website said it could take up to seven days). So I’m looking forward to getting started and being able to sink my teeth into some copywriting projects.

I’ll of course be keeping my page updated with all the exciting ventures I begin and I look forward to seeing where this takes me.

Until next time…

Another award… this time the Quartet of Radiance!

The lovely Monique over at Mind of Monique has presented me with the incredible Quartet of Radiance Award! This amazing honour came only a week and a half after my Liebster Award nomination, so I couldn’t believe it! I was literally floating on cloud nine the entire day.

I’ve tried to find the origins of this award but it has proven pretty tricky! What I have found however, is that this award is made up of four separate ones… The Influential Blogger Award, The Awesome Blog Content Award, The Inner Peace Award and The Sunshine Award. Yikes – what an overwhelming honour!

My Liebster Award nomination!

Image

Firstly, thank you so very much to the fabulous Bepresentyoga for nominating me for the Liebster Award! I still can’t quite get my head around it! Secondly, when I started my blog at the beginning of the year, I could never have imagined that I could be nominated for any awards… I just hoped that a few people would read and hopefully enjoy the content I was producing.

A little bit about the award… It is an award that is given to bloggers by bloggers and has German origins, with Liebster translating as ‘dearest’. I’ve read that some bloggers unfortunately see this as an irritating chain mail style award, but I couldn’t think of any better way to give fantastic blogs the recognition they deserve! If Bepresentyoga hadn’t nominated me, it would certainly have been one of the blogs that I would have nominated, as it truly is one to check out! The rules to this award are as follows:
1) Thank the blogger who gives it to you.
2) Answer the eleven questions he/she asks.
3) Nominate eleven bloggers with less than 500 followers.
4) Ask these eleven bloggers eleven questions.
5) Let these bloggers know that you have nominated them.

The following questions are the ones that I have been asked to answer. Here goes…

1) If you could change careers and start a brand new one tomorrow, what would you do?

Without a shadow of a doubt, it would be a career as a Wedding Planner/Events Manager! It was always an equally split decision between working in magazines/publishing/writing-of-some-sort and going into the wedding planning industry. I can’t quite remember why I chose my editorial path over the other but I’m so glad I did, as not only do I get to work on the editorial team but I’m also the Events Manager from time to time! I’ve got the best of both worlds!

2) You win a 2 week vacation, all expenses paid. Where would you go?

Hmmm this one’s tricky! This is equally split between working with Orangutans in Borneo, working with Gorillas and Chimpanzees in Africa or going to Egypt to enter Tutankhamun’s original tomb (not this false one they’re going to build in order to preserve the original) and retracing Howard Carter’s steps in the lead up to his famous discovery!

3) You’ve been given one super power. What would you choose?

I was trying to think of one that could help others, for example be able to heal all illnesses… but then I started thinking about how there would then be too many people to fit on Earth etc etc. So instead, selfish I know, but I’d love the ability to breath under water unaided. Ever since I was little (thanks to the Disney classic which is The Little Mermaid), I’ve had a fascination with what’s under the water… all of the dolphins, turtles, coral etc and I’d love nothing more than to swim freely under the water without a hefty gas tank strapped to me!

4 & 5) You have the opportunity to create a cure for one disease. What would it be and why?

Hands down, cancer. It’s just a vicious pain in the backside and it needs to be kicked to the kerb. Bring on next months Race for Life!

6) You could have dinner and discussion with anyone living or dead. Who would you choose?

The Queen. Or the cast of The Big Bang Theory (more specifically Jim Parsons aka Sheldon Cooper)!

7) Favourite movie?

Annoyingly, I don’t have one favourite 😦 I never have. Although I would say anything from Disney/Pixar or DC Marvel.

8) Favorite childhood memory?

Going to Disneyworld in Florida… I just looooove Disney!

9) If you could make a living writing on any topic. What topic would you choose?

Holiday destinations/events. Just writing about fun, inspiring or daredevil things that everyone should have a go at, would be super cool. I’m happy to be a guinea pig, testing them all out!

10) Why did you start your blog?

I wanted to improve my writing ability and become part of a community, so that I could learn even more from people around the world.

11) You have the chance to guest star on your favorite tv show. Which show would you pick?

The Big Bang Theory. Easy peasy!

The next step of this award required me to nominate 11 of my favourite blogs. This was super hard to choose as all of the blogs I follow are amazing in their own way. That said, my chosen 11 are:

1) http://rachbaznsime.wordpress.com
2) http://mindofmonique.wordpress.com
3) http://thatsassychick.wordpress.com
4) http://stupidmonsters.wordpress.com
5) http://suestrifles.wordpress.com
6) http://theonlydeadheadinthehameau.com
7) http://annotatedaudrey.wordpress.com
8) http://lifeundetermined.com
9) http://lulubellaloveslife.wordpress.com
10) http://aishasoasis.wordpress.com
11) http://mchelsmusings.wordpress.com

The following questions are for the above nominees… Enjoy!

1) If you could be any TV/film character, who would you be?
2) What is your special/hidden talent?
3) What is the first thing on your bucket list?
4) You win big on the lottery (over a million) but you’ve been told that you can only spend it on three things. What are they?
5) What is the best book you’ve ever read?
6) If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
7 & 8) If you have a role model, who is it and why do you look up to them?
9) What has been your proudest moment in life so far? (Either in yourself or someone else)
10) Tell us your favourite joke.
11) What is your biggest phobia (if you have one)?

I hope that my nominees thoroughly enjoy this award nomination 😀
